Here's an idea...

Sep. 8th, 2010 | 12:28 am

I'm a big fan of documentaries that show history of a particular area as a person travels through. My current favorite is Stephen Fry in America. It's an interesting perspective, seeing a foreigner who can see why Americans love America so much, and how every state has something to offer and a story to tell.

I love to travel. I love visiting cities and seeing the terrain of the land. I stop in interesting places and learn the history of the area as well as enjoy the scenery. One of my favorite spots is a bridge a few miles south of the Kentucky-Tennessee border on one of the older state-routes that I discovered on a trip to Huntsville, Al. When I rounded a large hill (or mountain I suppose) I was rewarded with a view that took my breath away: The sun had just started to set and bathed green hills with this ambient orange-red light and flowing beneath me was a river that was a rich blue that rippled with copper from the setting sun. It reminded me that despite what horrors I had seen in my life, that nature is stunningly beautiful and had the ability to grasp even the most jaded individual.

I've had a dream for quite some time now, born from my travels of well known as well as infamous paths in the Midwest, North and South. I want to drive as much of the original Route 66 as I can. I know it seems cliche but it truly is something I've wanted since I was young. My father was a big fan of Californian rock bands and old crooners who sang of the allure of driving the Mother Road, about the mysterious things on the way and how somehow a simple road captured and projected everything that I love about my country: Open spaces, small towns, odd sights and stunning scenery that inspired musicians and poets for decades.

I would love to travel down the original route and see what magic it still holds and if it could inspire my philosophical/poetic mind. I wonder if there is still a spark of life in the old, cracked asphalt or if it died, much like the cities along it did over time. There has to be something there, some energy that hasn't yet disappeared, some essence of its former glory.

Perhaps someday I'll take my best friend Nick and bring along a camera so we can record what we see and feel. It would make for a poor documentary as we both have little camera presence, but I think the memories would be well worth the price of the tapes. And perhaps when I turn into an old queen with a sweater vest and vast library I can show my nieces and nephews an interesting video of a trip I took to find myself.

I know there are people who will say it doesn't exist and they're half right. Most of the original route is gone, paved over or bypassed by faster more convenient routes. But much like we discover with old customs and civilizations that have been seemingly eradicated through progress, they always find a way to survive.

Monthly Rant Quota: Friends

Aug. 25th, 2010 | 01:40 am

Recently my name has been coming up more and more in conversations it seems, and that's pretty cool. I'm glad people like me and find me humorous or endearing enough to tell about me to other people. It's very very flattering and humbling at the same time.

However...Collapse )

I don't care what drama comes from this, I've just needed to say it before I 'sploded with hate and death. And guts. Toodles!
